About This Course
The HLTAID011: Provide First Aid course offers secondary school students an opportunity to develop essential life-saving skills while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Designed to prepare students to respond confidently in emergency situations, the course introduces the fundamental principles of first aid and equips learners with practical skills to provide immediate care until professional medical assistance arrives.
Students will gain hands-on knowledge in areas such as assessing emergency situations, performing CPR, managing injuries and medical conditions, responding to incidents safely, and communicating effectively during emergencies. Through practical training and scenario-based learning, students build confidence, problem-solving abilities, and the skills required to act quickly and responsibly in real-world situations.

First Aid
Officer

Assessment

Practical First Aid Activities
- Students participate in practical first aid and emergency response activities throughout the course

Training
This course provides students with practical first aid knowledge and hands-on experience to develop the confidence and skills required to respond effectively in emergency situations. Training combines theoretical learning with practical activities and simulated emergency scenarios to build real-world first aid capability.
- How to respond to an emergency situation, including identifying and assessing hazards, ensuring scene safety, assessing the casualty, recognising when emergency assistance is required, and communicating effectively with emergency services
- How to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with current first aid guidelines
- How to safely operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) during a cardiac emergency
- How to observe, record and report incident details accurately following workplace and first aid procedures
- Demonstration of safe manual handling techniques when providing assistance to casualties
- Participation in post-incident review, debriefing and evaluation processes
- Application of first aid procedures for a range of common incidents and medical conditions, including:
- allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
- bleeding management and wound care
- choking and airway obstruction
- bites, stings and envenomation, including pressure immobilisation techniques
- fractures, sprains and strains using appropriate support and immobilisation methods
- respiratory distress and asthma management
- recognition and management of shock

Funding & Enrolment Information
The program attracts VET funding and is designed to be delivered through secondary schools. Eligible students may access available government funding, with schools charged the applicable student contribution and VCAA-prescribed materials fee. Students must be enrolled through VASS by the relevant VCAA enrolment deadlines to receive funding. School invoicing is based on a minimum class size of 15 students per trainer.
Important: Students should be aware that enrolling in this qualification may impact their future entitlement to government-funded VET training. Students are encouraged to speak with their school’s VET Coordinator for further information before enrolling.

Free biannual workshop (first Monday of June & November) covering resume writing, interview skills, networking and Australian workplace culture. Includes Certificate of Completion.
